No.1 Beef Noodle House - Hangry Review

It was one of those days where my friend and I were seeking a simple yet comforting dinner. We were around the east Vancouver area close to Metrotown and I remembered that a somewhat famous small, neighborhood-friendly Taiwanese restaurant existed nearby. So the two of us thought to ourselves, “why not?”

Situated right across Moscrop Secondary School, what grabs you right away is just how packed the restaurant is. A lot of that can probably be attributed to the high school students and family members who don’t feel like cooking at home and just want to have a hearty meal close-by. With that being said, the food itself wasn’t slacking by any means. Choosing from a wide range of selections actually proved to be a simple task with our hungry stomachs.

I chose the Fried Fish Nuggets With Rice Combo, and I have to say that I was impressed by how the fish nuggets didn't leave a thick layer of oil on your lips the more you bit into them, and the fact that you could taste the fish meat within the fried skin. The serving size as a whole was similar to those you get at say pearl castle with the additional veggie dishes, but what really caught my eyes were the shrimp chips and “rou zao” (or minced pork) on top of the rice. All welcoming additions of course that did not lose in the flavour department to the main course. The chips did not feel overly greasy and was crisp, while the rou zao wasn't overly salty to the point that you needed an accompanying bite of rice every time. Furthermore, one thing I love in particular about Taiwanese food is that it’s not overly powering on the taste buds, and this meal held true to that.

My friend meanwhile ordered the Spicy Fried Chicken Nuggets With Rice Combo, and likewise most things I said about my order applied to his. He didn’t have the minced pork on top of his rice, but got deep fried tofu to make up for that (maybe it was a calculated move). Again, genuine tastes with a nice savory sauce on top and pickled kimchi on the side.

I also appreciated the servers who were very friendly and the meals that were delivered to us in adequate time. I wouldn’t say that I had a mind-blowing dining experience, but the little additions to the meals and the down-to-earth taste in each bite definitely turned me into a returning customer.
